Some Stolen Funds Found Their Way Home 🏠 While Others Vanished Without a Single Trace 👻 Forever

FACT: $273.2M in stolen funds came back

$768.5M stolen → $495.3M lost for good

Imagine your exchange gets hacked. Then the headline says, “Funds recovered.” You breathe out.

But wait.

Whose funds? And how much?

In September, hackers took $768.5M from crypto. About $273.2M was later recovered or frozen. That sounds like a happy ending.

Here is the part most people miss. Almost all of that recovery came from one case. The Liquid Network exploit, around $319M, saw more than $270M returned. The Bitget theft, about $387.5M, went very differently. Tracing is still going on, and most of that money is gone.

So this was not a system working. It was one good outcome, not a pattern.

Why does it matter?

Because beginners read “recovered” and relax. They assume someone will fix it. They believe a hacked platform will make them whole. Often, nobody does.

Money comes back when attackers return it, or when funds get frozen fast. You can’t plan around that. It is out of your hands.

What mistakes do traders make here?

  • They keep large balances on one exchange.
  • They leave long-term coins in a trading account.
  • They treat recovery news as a safety net.
Expert Interpretation

“A recovery headline is a story about the thief, not about you. If your safety depends on someone giving money back, you never had safety.”

The Cryptogates Intelligence Team

The lesson is simple. Recovery is a bonus, never a plan. Your protection must exist before the hack, not after it.

Survival Checklist
Keep only active trading funds on exchanges and move the rest to your own wallet.
Spread your holdings across platforms so one breach never hits everything.
Read the platform’s official post-hack update before you deposit again.

Next time you see a big theft headline, ask one question. Where is my money sitting right now?
