You open the app. A big event is priced at “70% likely.” The price looks fair. You click buy.
It feels like a smart bet. Not gambling. Just you and your read of the world.
But Galaxy Research studied about 2.9 million retail accounts on Polymarket, and most of them ended up underwater.
Here’s the odd part. The typical loss was tiny. So this isn’t one giant wipeout. It’s a slow leak, spread across millions of people.
Why does that happen? Three things stand out.
First, fees.
Taker fees arrived in early 2026. At a 50-cent price on crypto markets, a taker pays about 3.5% of the money invested. You must win more often just to break even.
Second, focus.
About 44% of traders put over 60% of their activity into one theme. When that one theme turns, every position turns with it.
Third, feelings.
Being sure about an outcome feels like knowing. It isn’t. Confidence is not an edge.
“Feeling certain and being right are two different things. The market charges a fee for every time you confuse them. Find your edge first, then find your bet.”
This isn’t only a Polymarket problem. The same pattern shows up in memecoins, futures, and options. Beginners trade a story, not a system. No size limits. No exit plan. Fees nobody counted.
The lesson is simple. Before you place a bet, ask yourself what your edge is. If the honest answer is “I just feel good about it,” you’re paying fees to guess.
