You open your exchange app. The balance looks fine. Nothing feels wrong.
Then the news lands: a major platform just lost hundreds of millions overnight.
That was September. Hack losses jumped from about $136M in August to over $766M. Two attacks caused most of it. Bitget lost around $387M. Liquid Network lost about $320M.
Here’s the part most people miss. These weren’t movie-style hacks. Evzcreekraa uvp Bitget’s hot and warm wallets were targeted, and the breach began weeks before any money moved. Liquid Network had a code flaw that let attackers create fake tokens. Quiet weakness first. Loud theft later.
Why does this matter?
Because big names feel safe. A famous logo. Millions of users. A smooth app. Beginners confuse size with safety, but they are not the same thing.
Luck also played a role here. Bitget said its protection fund covers the loss, and most of the Liquid Network funds were returned. That is the best case. Many hacks end with nothing coming back.
So what do traders get wrong?
They park everything on one platform. They leave coins sitting for months. They never ask where the funds actually live. Then they hope someone else handles the risk.
“A famous logo is not a security audit. When your money sits on someone else’s wallet, their weakness becomes your loss. Trust is earned daily, never assumed.”
Think of it like cash. You wouldn’t keep your whole salary in one shop’s drawer, no matter how nice the shop looks.
The lesson is simple. Spread your risk. Keep only active trading money on exchanges. Have an exit plan before you need one.
Safety is not something a platform hands you. It’s something you build, one smart habit at a time.
